Eley and Sherrie E., an Oklahoma couple with a deep affection for horses, expanded their herd by adopting two horses from the ASPCA’s Equine Adoption and Transition Center (ETAC) in El Reno, Oklahoma. Initially, they welcomed King, a 3-year-old blue roan, into their family. During the adoption process, Eley noticed Chief, a timid 9-year-old bay roan registered with the Pinto Horse Association, in a neighboring stall. Feeling a strong connection, the couple returned a week later to adopt Chief as well.

Chief had faced significant challenges prior to his adoption. Abandoned in 2022 and suspected of having been abused, he was surrendered to ETAC. Despite being adopted once, he was returned due to his adopters’ divorce. At ETAC, Chief was diagnosed with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), a neurological disease affecting the central nervous system, and was treated for ulcers and fly-bite allergies. His fearful demeanor and sensitivity to loud noises indicated a troubled past.

Now, under the compassionate care of Eley and Sherrie, Chief is gradually acclimating to his new environment alongside their other horses, Sky, Roany, Elvis, and King. The couple’s dedication exemplifies the profound impact that adopting rescue horses can have, offering them a second chance at a fulfilling life.

If you’re inspired by Eley and Sherrie’s story and are considering adding a horse to your family, adopting a rescue horse is a meaningful way to provide a loving home to an animal in need. The ASPCA’s Equine Adoption and Transition Center in El Reno, Oklahoma, offers various services for horse owners and enthusiasts, including opportunities to adopt.

By choosing adoption, you not only enrich your own life but also make a significant difference in the life of a horse, offering them a chance to thrive in a loving environment. For example, Robby (pictured here with this blog post), is my 28-year-old gelding rescued from abuse and neglect. Despite his past hardships, Robby has shown incredible resilience and capacity for love. Every day, he greets me with a gentle nuzzle, a testament to his forgiving nature and the bond we’ve built together. His journey from suffering to trust reminds me of the transformative power of compassion and second chances. Adopting a rescue horse like Robby not only changes their life but enriches yours in ways you never imagined.
